Visa and Master card have mandated a worldwide EMV standard for chip based credit cards and 3DES encryption, in order to give more security for card holders and retailers. Depending on what EFTPOS network a merchant retailer belongs to, there are different hardware and software upgrades for compliance. EMV is a new standard that enables chip cards to work anywhere in the world. It offers increased security and greater protection against credit card fraud. 3DES also know as Triple Data Encryption standard, is a strong encryption that provides further protection for cardholders PINS when transmitted over the EFTPOS network. The Chip above has 4 protocol layers. The first layer is the actual microprocessor silicon chip. The second layer is a small operating system to communicate with the outside environment. Third layer is the EMV application that has compliance specification to EMV. The top layer contains the cryptographic keys and user data.
